Storm Safety: Tips for Protecting Your Hot Tub From Strong Winds

protecting your hot tub from strong winds

on January 6, 2015 in Care & Maintenance

Powerful winds can be a scary sight, knocking over tall trees and throwing outdoor furniture across your backyard. Thankfully, hot tubs are a lot heavier than furniture. During normal or even high winds, your hot tub should be fine, as long as it has a durable cover secured to it. ThermoSpas® hot tubs are durable, allowing them to withstand most types of weather without any problem.

If you’re expecting extremely high winds or a hurricane, however, you’ll want to prepare your hot tub just in case. Thankfully, protecting your hot tub on very windy days doesn’t take much time at all. Just follow the steps below to help keep your hot tub safer during extremely strong winds.

Invest in a Durable Hot Tub Cover

A cover is the most important factor to keeping your hot tub safe from the outside environment, including strong winds. When debris, branches or even outdoor furniture flies through the air on an extremely windy day, a high-quality hot tub cover will protect the inside of your spa from any damage. A durable cover is also a lot less likely to be punctured or damaged itself from these flying objects.

With a ThermoSpas® hot tub, you don’t have to worry about buying a high-quality hot tub cover because your spa will come with one. ThermoSpas® hot tub covers feature strong cam-lock straps and spa lock systems, helping to keep your cover secure on the windiest days. ThermoSpas covers also feature a thick and dense foam core and strong center support, increasing their strength and weight load. You can feel comfort knowing your hot tub is safe with a ThermoSpas® hot tub cover protecting it.

Lock Your Cover and Make Sure Your Straps are Firmly Secured

Though you should be locking your straps every time you’re done using the hot tub, it’s especially important to do so during extremely high winds. After you’ve locked your straps in, gently tug on the strap to make sure it’s fully locked.

Then, try moving your hot tub cover. If it moves at all, tighten the straps until your cover doesn’t budge. This will make it a lot more difficult for the wind to move.

Secure Extra Straps to Your Cover

If you’re expecting abnormally strong winds or a hurricane, you may want to purchase extra straps for your cover. Doubling up on straps will help ensure that even the strongest winds won’t move it. You’ll also have spare straps available in case the ones on your hot tub break.

Remove Debris and Furniture That Could Damage Your Hot Tub

Try to remove anything that could possibly puncture your hot tub cover or damage the hot tub from the area around it before the winds begin. These objects could include tree branches, plant pots, outdoor furniture, deck furniture and other debris that may have already found their way into your backyard from the wind.
