Eric and His Cinderella Pool
WHO:
Eric, an eight-year-old second grader from Grafton, MA who suffers from cerebral palsy (CP)
WHAT:
When Eric first floated in a hotel hot tub, he was hooked immediately. The eight-year-old is confined to a wheelchair and had never felt such freedom of movement before. Thanks to ThermoSpas, Priority Electric and the Starlight Children’s Foundation of New England, Eric is now able to experience that freedom right in his own backyard.
WHY:
Eric calls his hot tub, appropriately enough, a “Cinderella Pool.” The name --a reflection of his favorite movie -- highlights the similarity between Eric and the fairy tale character who, through the kind granting of a wish, is able to see her dreams come true.
Not only does a hot tub provide Eric with a chance to move and play freely on his own, but it also offers proven therapy. Eric’s doctor, Christopher Stille, MD of UMASS Memorial Health Care, says the benefits of hydrotherapy (water therapy) include:
- Muscle relaxation, which can reduce muscle spasms in children with spastic CP
- Decreased gravity, which increases breath control
- Improved trunk control, balance and coordination
- Increased mobility and range of motion for children who are wheelchair-bound
- Increased strength and endurance
Eric lives with his parents, Cynthia and Richard, his twin brother Aaron, and his adopted brother Anthony. Aaron, like Eric, was born prematurely and has had some severe health problems including a now-removed tracheostomy. Eric’s brother Anthony also has cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair.
ThermoSpas donated and installed an Avalon Spa, which is big enough to fit the whole family, yet still fit in their backyard. It comes with 22 jets for therapy and an ice bucket and shelf for drinks.
“Since Eric received his ThemoSpa, we have been able to replace his muscle relaxant medication with a spa session! The Spa offers wonderful, soothing therapy for Eric's tight muscles, but he does not realize he is getting therapy, he thinks it's just plain fun!
Eric enjoys his spa year-round and especially loves to go in when it's snowing outside. One unexpected bonus to the spa is that it has helped Eric socialize with his peers. His friends at school think it is so cool that Eric has a hot tub and it's a great way for him to entertain friends!
Eric's wish has not only benefited him directly, it has also helped his entire family. The ThermoSpa is great relaxation therapy for his weary parents, as we cope with the day-to-day challenges of raising children with disabilities.
ThermoSpas truly has made a difference in Eric's life and we are forever grateful!”

"Eric has spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy. This means that his muscles are very tight and he sometimes gets muscle spasms and cramps. Because of this, he does not sleep well. Eric goes into the ThermoSpa almost every evening. This helps to relax his muscles and helps him sleep at night. We have also been able to decrease his muscle relaxant medication since he received the hot tub.
Eric loves to go into his 'Cinderella Pool'! It is great fun for him. It has also helped him socially. His friends love to visit and go into the hot tub with Eric.
We all love the ThermoSpa. What a super stress-reliever for Mom and Dad. It also gets us out of the house more in the wintertime. We love to go into the ThermoSpa when it is snowing outside.
A big THANK YOU! Thermospas has really made a difference in our lives; not only for Eric, but his entire family."
