WHO: Shannon, a ten-year-old twin from Metheun, MA born with spastic Cerebral Palsy (CP),
WHAT: Shannon’s favorite time of day is bath time because the hot water allows her muscles to relax and she can move around with less pain. Unfortunately, the bath water soon turns cold and, as she grows, the tub offers less room for movement. But now, thanks to ThermoSpas and the Dream Factory, Shannon will be able to experience the benefits of warm water therapy for as long as she likes right in her own backyard.
WHY: Shannon was born with spastic CP, cortical blindness, seizure disorder and esophageal reflux. She uses a G-tube since she cannot tolerate solid food, employs a wheelchair because she is unable to sit without assistance and cannot walk and utilizes a communication board to speak as she is nonverbal. Despite these difficulties, Shannon has above average intelligence and is a very brave and cheerful girl.
Shannon was confined to a body cast for six weeks this past fall and has hoped her dream of floating, swimming and splashing with her twin sister Kerry would someday come true. Fortunately, this little sweetheart is having her wish granted today.
Not only does a hot tub provide Shannon with a chance to move and play more freely on her own, but it also offers proven therapy:
- Muscle relaxation, which can reduce muscle spasms
- Decreased gravity, which increases breath control
- Improved trunk control, balance and coordination
- Increased mobility and range of motion
- Increased strength and endurance
ThermoSpas donated the Healing Spa™ to Shannon. Designed with the Arthritis Foundation, The Healing Spa features a special child seat, 69 therapy jets and easy-to-use knobs and handrails.
"Shannon is loving her hot tub. Thank you so much for all of your efforts. Shannon enjoys the hot tub at least three to four times a week. It's making a big difference in her muscle tone."
Jeanne M., Shannon's mother
