WHO: Kaitlin, a sophomore from Marion, MA, who suffers from fibromyalgia

WHAT: Since 6th grade, when she was hospitalized for an unexplained virus, Kaitlin has had almost constant muscle and joint pain.  Ultimately diagnosed with fibromyalgia, Kaitlin has found little relief from medication, can count on one hand the number of nights she has been able to sleep through the pain and has only been well enough to attend high school 13 days this year. The only time Kaitlin has really been able to escape from the pain is when she soaked in a hotel hot tub while on vacation.  “I didn’t ever want to get out,” said Kaitlin.

WHY: According to Dr. Don Goldenberg, Director of the Arthritis-Fibromyalgia Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, “Kaitlin’s condition causes chronic muscle pain, stiffness and spasms that interfere with her activities and sleep.  Warm water therapy would be beneficial to alleviate these symptoms.”  It is also hoped that the muscle relaxing effect of the hot tub may allow Kaitlin to discontinue some of her medication, sleep better and be able to return to school.

Not only does The Healing Spa provide Kaitlin with a chance to move about painlessly, but it also offers proven therapy.  Benefits include:

  • Muscle relaxation, which can reduce muscle spasms
  • Decreased gravity, which increases breath control
  • Improved trunk control, balance and coordination
  • Increased mobility and range of motion
  • Increased strength and endurance

ThermoSpas donated The Healing Spa to Kaitlin.  Designed in collaboration with The Arthritis Foundation, The Healing Spa provides warm water therapy for people with severe muscle and joint pain and is the first hot tub ever to receive the Arthritis Foundation’s “Ease of Use” Commendation.  It features a special child seat, 69 therapy jets and easy-to-use knobs and handrails.

Kaitlin lives with her mother, Betty, who nominated her for the free therapeutic hot tub.  “I tried every suggestion from her doctor.  The only treatment that seemed helpful long-term was water therapy, but my insurance stopped paying for the sessions,” said Betty Durkin, “This donation is an answer to our prayers.”

“I would like to extend my utmost gratitude for how much work you have put forth, the speedy delivery and your sheer kindness.  I have never come across a person so dedicated to their work as you. You’re very inspiring; helping children to get relief of such pain is highly respectable. Pain relief is a new phrase in my vocabulary. I cannot believe how much a machine with air, water, and heat could help me as much as the ThermoSpa your generous company gave me. I could probably write a full essay on how much I want to thank you but I guess I’ll kept this shorter and save the essays for my English class. Thank you so much I cannot begin to express how much meaning this act has had upon me. Thank you EVER so much.”
"Katie has benefited greatly from this wonderful gift. It has made the really bad days tolerable. It has made every day even better. Her range of motion has improved and pain decreased. Her condition I guess will never go away, but with exercise, some pain meds and her hot tub she is doing so much better and improving both physically and mentally.

Mentally the ThermoSpa has put her back in the real world. Her world for a good part of high school was home and tutors. When you are a kid and not in school 50% of the time, you are forgotten by most of the other kids and miss the usual hype of going to games and being invited to activities. The online class she was allowed to take was just not the same. By her senior year she was able to participate in drama and attend night school full time. She still had a lot to make up. I never thought she would graduate the same year as her class, but she did. They walked in May and she finished her last class in December of the same year. So she has her high school diploma and is looking to the future.

The ThermoSpa has helped me as her mother by seeing the improvements in her condition. It also has helped me as I have arthritis. We often are in the ThermoSpa together. This quiet time lets us reflect and just enjoy each other's company and let the pain go away. My daughter has grown into a wonderful young lady with a bright future. She just passed a test to be a para professional in Ma (teacher's aide). She plans to start doing this next September and also start college at night.

The Seasons of Giving program is a wonderful program that helps families and gives pain free time to the children who are the lucky recipients of it. The benefits of water are wonderful and what the ThermoSpa does to the water is a blessing. Our lives have been ever changes by meeting the wonderful people of ThermoSpas and having this wonderful gift."
