WHO: Woodstock, GA teen Erin P. suffers from MPS

WHAT: When Erin began aquatic physical therapy, she was hooked immediately.  The water exercises soothed her stiff and sore muscles and joints and allowed her to move about with less pain.   Unfortunately, she had to stop the classes because it became too difficult to get her in and out of the pool. But today, thanks to ThermoSpas, Erin will be able to experience the benefits of warm water therapy every day right in her own backyard

WHY:  Erin suffers from San Filippo Syndrome, an MPS disorder that produces many physical and neurological problems (the most painful is muscle and joint stiffness).  It is a progressively worsening disease that is ultimately terminal.  According to her mother, “Erin has no short term memory, but does have some recall of when she was functioning at a normal level for a 7 year old.”

Erin is ambulatory but requires bi-lateral ankle braces. She sleeps in a hospital bed with metal rails to protect her from falls. She is unable to care for herself in any way. Her speech, both receptive and expressive, is gone.

“Erin loves the water,” says her mom, “She learned to swim at an early age. Prior to the MPS diagnosis, she was on the swim team. Up until last year, she swam at the Georgia Special Olympics with the assistance of her brother and sister.  She seems to relax in the water and always gets out of the bathtub with a smile on her face.  The gift of a ThermoSpa is a dream come true.”

Not only does a hot tub provide Erin with a chance to move freely and less painfully on her own, but it also offers proven therapy:

  • Muscle relaxation, which can reduce muscle spasms
  • Decreased gravity, which increases breath control
  • Improved trunk control, balance and coordination
  • Increased mobility and range of motion
  • Increased strength and endurance

Through its Seasons of Giving program, ThermoSpas has donated a Triton Elite hot tub, which has 46 therapeutic jets and the “Ease of Use” commendation from the Arthritis Foundation.

I am so happy to finally send you pictures of Erin getting into the hot tub for the very first time!!! I hope you can see the excitement and happiness on her face!

We know she is going to both benefit and love having spa therapy available to her 24/7. She did well getting into and out of the tub, and loved the full length seat side of the tub. Many, many thanks for this unbelievable gift! We are thoroughly thankful and grateful.

Erin has thoroughly enjoyed her new hot tub. The warm water is great for her legs, especially her weak ankles. She is able to get in and out with little difficulty and she slides right in to the full lounge seat! The weightlessness she experiences while in the tub allows her body to fully relax. Erin seems to relax after 15 minutes in the tub and it is especially helpful just before bed time!
